Hāwera is a city on the North Island of New Zealand with a population of 10,150 and is part of the South Taranaki District Council. The origins of the town can be found in a government military base that was established in 1866.

Hāwera is a small town located on Highway 3 and is a 90-minute drive to New Plymouth in the north and a 60-minute drive to Whanganui in the south. The main railway line was established in 1881. Passenger services were discontinued in the mid-1970s and only freight is transported now.

The name Hāwera originated from fighting between two tribes in the region. The tribe being attacked captured the other tribe’s settlement and set it on fire as a sign of victory. In June 2019, the New Zealand Geographic Board added a macron to the official spelling of the name.
